Aston, PA – Marywood University’s field hockey team has been picked to finish fifth in a balloting of league head coaches. Cabrini College has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) coaches' poll. After being seeded 4th going into post-season, the Cavaliers battled their way through the CSAC Championship to earn the champion title last year. Cabrini received four out of nine first place votes earning them 74 points in the poll. CSAC Runner-ups, Neumann University received three first place votes and finished in a close second place with 72 points.
"We are very excited about the upcoming season," said Cabrini Head Coach Jackie Neary. "We value this honor because we understand how strong our conference is in field hockey. We are looking forward to starting the regular season."
Top competitors Keystone College and Gwynedd-Mercy College will challenge the Cavaliers and Knights throughout conference play. Keystone received one first place vote giving them 59 points while Gwynedd-Mercy tallied 57 points for a predicted fourth place finish.
Marywood University (44), Immaculata University (40), Cedar Crest College (32), College of Notre Dame (14) and Rosemont College (13) rounded out the voting.
The Pacers finished 8-9 last year and were the fifth seed in the conference playoffs after finishing the CSAC regular season with a 4-4 mark. The Pacers lost 1-0 on penalty strokes to eventual champion Cabrini in the first round. Megan Bullock takes over the reign as Head Coach after serving 2009 as the team’s assistant.
The 2010 CSAC Championship play begins with quarterfinal play Saturday October 30th. The Championship game is scheduled for November 6th at the highest remaining seed.
