Pittsburgh, PA - Marywood University's record setting men's tennis season came to a close at the hands of the University of Texas-Tyler in NCAA First Round action Thursday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. UT-Tyler (15-6) beat the Pacers 5-0 to advance to Friday's second round where they will face Mary Washington. Marywood closes their season at 15-4 and in the process set a new school record for wins in a season.
With four of six losses on the year coming to nationally ranked teams, UT-Tyler, ranked 9th in the West Region, made quick work of Marywood in doubles action to grab an early 3-0 lead. Adam Chirhart and Joshua Chavez downed the Marywood duo of Barrett Wentworth (Clarks Summit, PA) and Ethan Jones (Lebanon, PA) 8-1 at three-doubles as the Patriots went up 1-0. David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik then beat Greg Chilson (Mountainside, NJ) and Daniel Pfafman (Stratford, NJ) 8-2 in the top doubles flight before Marywood's Todd Doran (South Windsor, CT) and Wyatt Nolan (Montoursville, PA) fell at two-doubles by a score of 8-2.
Playing without Evan Bolus (Clarks Summit, PA), Marywood was forced to make several lineup changes in both singles and doubles action. Every doubles team for the Pacers was playing together for the first time, and in singles action only Chilson was playing in his normal flight.
At three singles, Pfafman fell to Chirhart 6-0, 6-0 to put UT-Tyler up 4-0 and then the Patriots' Nick Kreines ended the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wyatt Nolan at six-singles. Texas-Tyler led all other matches in progress, but all went unfinished as NCAA matches end when the decisive fifth point is reached.
Marywood, the 2010 CSAC Champions, conclude their record-setting year with the most wins in the 19-year history of the men's tennis program (15) and with their first trip to NCAA Tournament play. The Pacers also captured conference titles in 1998 and 2006 but the were not awarded automatic bids those years.
