Clermont, FL – Marywood University hit well for the second time Thursday but this time NAIA member Cedarville University had the upper hand as Cedarville defeated the Pacers 8-5 in softball action Thursday evening in Florida. Marywood, who earlier today beat Lycoming 10-8, falls to 2-6 with the loss while the Yellow Jackets move to 4-5.
Cedarville, playing as the home team, would jump out to a 5-2 lead after three innings of play and add a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before a late Marywood rally fell short. The Pacers scored twice in the sixth on a two-run, inside the park homer from Kim Lope (Clifton, NJ) but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
Lope finished the day 1-3 with those two RBIs, while Ashley Dommes (Scranton, PA) went 2-4 with a RBI double. Kaitlyn Brennan (Taylor, PA) was had two triples and an RBI while Kim Flanagan (Monroe, NY) had a double, RBI and run scored. Freshman Meghin Palmer (Greencastle, PA) was 2-4 with a double and Talia Williams (Berwick, PA) also had a double.
Brennan went the distance on the mound for Marywood but fell to 0-3 on the year after allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Melissa Murphy got the win for Cedarville, pitching a complete game and allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out seven Pacers.
The Pacers will play their final two games in Florida Friday. Marywood will take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 9:30 am before wrapping up their southern swing with a 11:30 single game against Lebanon Valley College.
