Big Middle Innings Carry Neumann Past Marywood
Three Pacers record two hits in 14-4 loss to Neumann

Aston, PA - Leading 5-3 after four innings of play in Friday afternoon’s Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball game, Neumann College would score five runs in the fifth inning and tack on four more in the sixth to pull away and earn a 14-4 win over Marywood University. With the win the Knights improved to 16-14-1 on the season and 5-4 in the CSAC while the Pacers record slides to 7-20 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

The Pacers got on the board in the first inning as Joe Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) stole home. Neumann responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Bobby Callan reached on an error and Matt Gallagher hit a triple for Callan to score. Gallagher then scored on a Kevin Lengyel single.

The Knights added three runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Marywood scored two runs in the fourth to cut Neumann’s lead to 5-3. A five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. The Knights added four more runs in the sixth. The Pacers could muster up one more unearned run in the seventh.

Lengyel picked up the win for Neumann after going seven innings in which he gave up nine hits, three earned runs, and struck out eight Pacers. Ray Schmoltze pitched two innings in relief for the Knights

Gallagher finished the game 3-for-5 for Neumann with four RBI’s and two runs scored. Lengyel also went 3-for-5 from the plate, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Matt Grossi had three hits in the game for the Knights.

Korey Evans (Goshen, NY) took the loss for Marywood after giving up five runs on six hits. Alex Magid (South Salem, NY) and John Stolan (Old Forge, PA) each pitched two innings in relief while Mike Paterno (Montclair, NJ) worked the final inning.

Joe Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) had two hits for the Pacers and also scored two runs, while Matt Newcomb (Honesdale, PA) and Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ) each added two hits for Marywood.

The Pacers and Knights will close out their season series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader slated to begin at 12:00 noon in Scranton.
