Scranton, PA – Marywood University rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit and Brittany Beaton got the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in overtime as the host Pacers topped visiting Cedar Crest College 3-2 in overtime Wednesday afternoon in Scranton. The Pacers leveled their overall and conference records with the win as they now stand at 8-8 on the year and 4-4 in CSAC play. The Falcons fell to 5-11 (2-5 CSAC) with the loss.

Cedar Crest got on the board just 3:50 into the game when Ashley Jennings took a feed from Catherine Onjack and beat Marywood keeper Jamie Bowman (Cheshire, CT) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Pacers responded less than ten minutes later when senior Kristy Califano (Suffern, NY) scored off a pass from Brittany Beaton (Fleetwood, PA). Beaton slid the pass to Califano after getting a rebound off her own shot.

With just over 10 minutes left in the opening half, the Falcons would grab a 2-1 lead when Tammy Gruzdis scored after a feed to the far post by Jessica Macko. Cedar Crest would go into the break holding that one goal lead despite being out-shot by the hosts 6-3.

With 10:06 left in the game, Marywood took advantage of a man-up situation as Julie Dougherty (Wading River, NY) tied the game at 2-2 with a chip shot from the edge of the arc that went over the head of Falcon goalie Rachel Orlean.

Two and a half minutes into overtime, Orlean came up huge for the Falcons with a stop on a Beaton breakaway to keep the game going. The senior goalie would then come up with the biggest save of the game as she stopped a penalty stroke with 11:29 left in overtime, diving to her lower right to stop Dougherty’s attempt for a game-winner.

But Marywood’s offense kept coming at Orlean and the Falcon defense as the Pacers out-shot their opponents 7-1 in the extra period. With exactly seven minutes left, Beaton scored on a rebound from an Emily Wentzel (East Earl, PA) shot for the game-winner.

Bowman finished the game with one save for Marywood to collect the win while Orlean had 10 stops for the Falcons.

Marywood (8-8) will enjoy a 10-day rest before returning to action in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs on Saturday, October 31. The Pacers’ seeding and opponent for the playoffs have not yet been determined but they will be on the road.
