Scranton, PA - Junior Brittany Beaton had two goals and an assist and Marywood University held off a late rally from Misericordia University as the host Pacers beat the Cougars 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action Monday afternoon in Scranton. Marywood improves to 7-8 on the year while Misericordia falls to 6-10 with the loss.

Beaton (Fleetwood, PA) opened the scoring just 1:14 into the game as Marywood attacked down the left flank from the start. Emily Eremo (Factoryville, PA) slid a cross in that Beaton put behind Cougar net-minder Grace Riker for the 1-0 Marywood lead. That lead would last less than five minutes, however, as Misercordia pressed for the equalizer and got it at the 6:11 mark when Camilla Hansen scored on a Kelsey DeBruyne assist following a rebound from another Cougar shot.

Despite controlling much of the offense in the first half, Misercordia could not capitalize no several other chances. Marywood's Julie Dougherty (Wading River, NY) would give the Pacers a 2-1 lead with a goal assisted by Beaton at the 14:47 mark. The Pacers would carry that lead into halftime despite being out-shot 9-4 in the opening half.

Just over seven minutes into the second half, Beaton got an all-important insurance goal, the eventual game-winner, when she scored on a scramble in front of the net off a feed from Dana Sweeney (Sussex, NJ). In the 56th minute, the Cougars made it a 3-2 game when Samantha Sorokas scored unassisted.

Misericordia held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners, and nearly tied the game at the end of regulation with three corners in a row in the final two minutes of play. However, two of the Cougars' shots were saved by Marywood goalie Jamie Bowman (Cheshire, CT) and another shot from Amanda Blank went off the post of the goal to preserve the Marywood win.

Bowman finished with eight saves on the day for Marywood while Riker had four for the Cougars. Marywood returns to action Wednesday when they host Cedar Crest College in an important CSAC game at 4:00 pm. A win could clinch a playoff berth for the Pacers.
