Wilkes-Barre, PA – Marywood University dropped a tough 3-2 match to host Wilkes University in the opening tilt of Saturday afternoon’s non-conference tri-match before falling 3-1 to Albright College. The Pacers, who had their four-match win streak snapped after the loss to the Colonels, are now 7-13 on the season.
In Saturday’s opener, Wilkes jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-11 and 25-22 before Marywood responded with a pair of wins of their own, 25-16 and 25-20 to force a decisive fifth game. The Colonels would claim a slim 23-21 decision to win the game and the match.
Taryn Borden (Bridgewater, NJ) led Marywood with 17 kills and added 11 digs in the match. Emily Fillman (Clarion, PA) contributed15 kills and 18 digs, matching Arielle Cassidy (Garwood, NJ) for the team-best in digs. Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) was the third Pacer in double-digit kills with 11 while Alyssa Hantranft dished out a team-high 40 assists and was credited with 17 digs.
Marywood got off to a good start against Albright in the second match of the day, earning a 28-26 win in the first game, but the Lions responded with wins of 25-20, 26-24, and 27-25 to keep the Pacers winless on the day.
Fillman again led the Pacers with 11 kills to finish with 26 on the day while adding 10 digs in the loss to Albright. Green added eight kills against the Lions while Hartranft had 28 assists to finish with 68 on the day. Cassidy and Lauren Rotunda (Danbury, CT) each had 10 digs in the match.
Marywood will look to get back on the winning track next Saturday when they host Gwynedd-Mercy College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Insalaco Arena.
