Marywood University is an institution whose academic quality is enhanced by a competitive athletic tradition and a comprehensive recreational program.
Marywood is an NCAA Division III institution and a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). As of July 1, 2008, the PAC will be known as the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). To read more about the change in conference name, please go to the PAC website. Pacers sport schedules are challenging and include contests against schools encompassing a wide geographic area. Fourteen (14) varsity sports are sponsored: six men's (baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis) and eight women's sports (basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball).
Since joining the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) in 1992, Marywood teams have captured 22 championships and earned 16 runner-up finishes. In that time, more than 400 student-athletes have earned All-Conference honors (164 First Team, 143 Second Team, 62 Honorable Mention and 50 All-Sportsmanship), six players have been recognized as the Player of the Year for their respective sport, and seven athletes were lauded as Regional All-Americans.
Equally important to all of the athletic honors, 890 athletes have earned All-Conference Honor Roll status (minimum 3.2 GPA), 22 athletes have earned Regional Academic All-American status, three athletes have been named the PAC Scholar Athlete of the Year and three more have earned NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships. This past spring (2008), standout softball player Erika Cook became Marywood's first athlete, male or female, to be named to a National Academic All-American team. Cook earned third team honors on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazien Academic All-American squad. Pacers’ coaches have also been awarded PAC Coach of the Year honors 29 times.
Marywood is also guided by the belief that recreational opportunities are vital to the collegiate experience. Thus we offer diverse opportunities in this area including a varied selection of more than forty intramural programs and a variety of fitness, aerobic, martial arts, and recreation classes. In addition, club sports such as cheerleading, dance team, swimming and boxing are sponsored. Free aerobic classes are also available for all students.
The $14 million Robert J. Mellow Center for Athletics and Wellness opened in the fall of 2006. The Mellow Center offers state-of-the-art fitness, recreation, and athletic opportunities and includes a premier fitness center, a climbing wall, an elevated running track, a dance/aerobic studio, an arena to showcase Pacers sports, and high tech athletic training areas. The Mellow Center compliments those activity areas within the current Health & Physical Education Center, which houses a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, recreation gym, and racquetball courts. Additional outdoor facilities include newly refurbished tennis courts, sand volleyball court, basketball courts, and three multi-purpose fields. Construction of a new multipurpose synthetic turf facility is underway and the main soccer field is undergoing a major renovation, which includes irrigation and drainage, during the summer of 2008.
